Computer simulation in education ppt

Simulation, once the domain of those faculty who enjoyed the technical aspects of using computerized mannequins, has now moved to center stage in nursing education.

Nursing programs realize that they can no longer afford to consider simulation as merely an 'add-on. It is now imperative to integrate simulation throughout the entire curriculum. The variety of simulation-based learning options can offer a way to replace traditional, and often hard to find, clinical experiences.

In this article, the author describes the backgroundtheoretical basisand current uses of simulation ; reports on simulation effectiveness in nursing; shares educational strategies to enhance effectiveness ; and considers simulation methods and feedback and debriefing strategies.

The conclusion addresses simulation evaluationand the future of simulation in nursing education. Citation: Aebersold, M. Simulation in undergraduate UG education has become one of the new policy areas to which leaders in both nursing education and practice will want to pay careful attention. As the nursing shortage increases, the number of faculty available to educate new nurses decreases. The number and availability of clinical sites is diminishing American Colleges of Nursing, and we will need to rely increasingly on simulation to fill the gaps.

The good news is that simulation-based learning has matured as an educational strategy and research about this area has increased. However, there remains much work to be done. In this article, I will briefly discuss the background of simulation; address the theoretical basis, and the current uses of simulation; report on simulation effectiveness in nursing; and share educational strategies to enhance simulation effectiveness.

I will discuss simulation methods, including feedback and debriefing strategies; consider simulation evaluation; and share my insights on the future of simulation opportunities for undergraduate nursing education.

It is not defined by a technology but rather an educational approach grounded in learning theories. Simulation is meant to replicate aspects of the real world in an interactive manner that allows learners to be immersed in the learning environment Gaba, b ; Jeffries, Aviation and the military have used simulation to train pilots and personnel in both skills and safety-related behaviors e.

Historically, simulation in nursing has been used primarily in undergraduate UG education to teach nursing skills. The first mannequin was a life-size doll named Mrs. She was built in by a doll maker, Martha Jenkins Chase, to train nurses to dress, turn, and transfer patients Weir, Nursing students would practice on mannequins, such as Mrs. Chase, or on each other by using various training devices to learn to administer injections, insert a nasogastric tube, and other basic nursing skills.

In the s there was a significant change in the world of educational simulation, a change that impacted the nursing skills laboratories. METIdeveloped affordable, high fidelity simulators based on the earlier pioneering work of David Gaba and others Gaba, a. Subsequently, nursing education has moved from a traditional skills laboratory into the world of high fidelity simulation HFS.

However, it is important to recognize today that, although a sophisticated, computerized mannequin can produce a high fidelity simulation, so also can an actor who is playing a role. Therefore, high fidelity simulation can be done with a high fidelity simulator i. There are a variety of simulators available, as well as several different simulation methods. The most common methods utilize computerized mannequins, role-play, standardized or simulated patients, and virtual simulations.

There is now a Healthcare Simulation Dictionary, which includes all commonly used terms in simulation Loprieato et al. Since the s there has been a tremendous amount of knowledge and research in the area of simulation-based learning.

Some very important, landmark studies have been completed. Simulation has become a cornerstone of UG nursing education.

It is important to understand benefits and policy implications of this shift. Simulation-based experiences SBEs most often occur in a simulation laboratory setting in which the UG students come for a defined period of time and engage in activities specifically designed around a set of learning objectives.Computer simulations have greatly evolved with progress in computer science over the past few decades.

With origins in a math experiment during WWII, simulation technologies now have widespread applications in various industries ranging from healthcare to manufacturing to entertainment. Simulation tools have found numerous successes and advantages in education, being used for teaching, training, and testing applications.

As computer technology continues to improve, simulations will become more immersive and will continue transforming applications in education.

Simulation-Based Learning: No Longer a Novelty in Undergraduate Education

The history of modern digital simulation can be traced back to WWII. Their experiments were very successful and simulations became very popular, finding applications in other industries. However, building and running simulations was very difficult and took a lot of time during this period.

Simulation technology continued to improve in the s as computer scientists made dedicated efforts to develop the capabilities and potential applications of simulators.

Inthe first industrial plant operations simulator was developed [3]. The first simulation conference, the Winter Simulation Conference, was held in Computer scientists gathered to discuss and document simulation languages.

Simulation tools gradually gained traction, with new uses in industrial training emerging over the following decades. The introduction of personal computers made this format of learning both practical and widely accessible. Real-time simulation and sophisticated 3D simulation environments were developed in the 90s and incorporated into training software as computer hardware improved [4]. Today, simulations are widely used in various industries for educating due to their numerous advantages.

Simulation tools offer many advantages compared to traditional teaching methods. They are able to demonstrate abstract concepts, allow interaction between users and simulated equipment, and provide users with feedback that allow users to improve their knowledge and skills. They are also cost-effective over the long-term. Simulation tools can transform abstract concepts into interactive visual content, making it easier for students to understand the performance and relationship between different system parts.

They can become familiar with the equipment and environment, and practice necessary skills without risking accidents to themselves, the equipment, and the environment. A wide variety of scenarios are available for students to experiment in, such as emergency events, so that they are able to execute the appropriate procedures when these events occur in the real world.

Students are able to reinforce theoretical knowledge with hands-on-training through simulation tools, giving a better understanding of the material. Simulation tools can track student progress and provide standardized feedback that can aid in developing skills. They can also offer targeted skill developmentā€”students can choose which skills to improve on and receive specific training resources, and educators can also control the content.

Training materials can be easily updated, developed, or modified, and training can be done regardless of time or place. Inability to access to physical training equipment is no longer a problem as simulated equipment is always accessible.

Simulation based technical training is cost-effective in the long-run, but the initial cost of creating them can be expensive. A high level of knowledge is needed to create the models and scenarios used in training. However, simulation tools save money by increasing the rate of skill development which reduces training time with physical equipment. This limits machine downtime, reducing impact on workplace productivity.

Application of computer simulation in business

These tools also allow students to train and experiment in a safe and controlled environment, avoiding the possibility of damage to themselves and expensive equipment. They are also reusable, and removing the necessity for equipment can reduce the cost of a course or program. Overall, as technology improves, simulation tools will continue to deliver realistic and immersive training scenarios, making them an indispensable and inexpensive educational tool.

There are many studies that prove that the use of simulations has improved learning [5]. The effectiveness of a simulation largely relies on the accuracy of the simulation. While simulations can be difficult to create, these models provide important feedback to the student in real time when accurately and realistically constructed [6]. Effectiveness also varies depending on the type of task being learned. There are key components of simulation training tools that make them effective, such as the addition of multimedia and the availability of immediate feedback.

These features add to the interactivity of simulations, and helps users stay engaged in exercises.

Multimedia components such as text, audio, images, animations, video make the simulation tool more immersive.PowerPoint is a great tool for creating interactive software simulations, thanks to its hyperlinks, animations and triggers. Let us start by creating the software simulation in PowerPoint. Each slide of this interactive PowerPoint presentation will represent a screenshot of your program. First, make the screenshots of your program.

There are three ways you can do this, depending on your software and preferences:. Use the PrintScreen function on your keyboard usually abbreviated as PrtScn or something similar.

Want to take a screenshot of a single window? In later versions of Windows starting with Vistayou can use the Snipping Tool for more advanced screen capturing. When you have accumulated a library of screenshots, place them on the slides to match the appearance of the program.

The easiest way to make your software simulation interactive is to make all buttons and links clickable. Each button and link opens a certain slide that represents the corresponding screen of your program. Create a Rectangle shape of the same size as the button and place it on the button. Right-click on the shape and select Hyperlink. The destination of the hyperlink is the screenshot of the window that appears in the program after clicking that button. After you publish the presentation with iSpring Suite, this button will be clickable and will take the viewer to the right screen, simulating the environment of your program.

Clickable hyperlinks will make your simulation interactive. Now we are going to add useful information to your software simulation so that your client will be able to learn as much as possible. Add animation to your tooltip to make it more effective.

For example, you can set the tooltip to appear a few seconds after the start of the slide. In this case, you let users explore the screen by themselves, then prompt them at some point to perform some required action. The software simulation should demonstrate the atmosphere and tone of your program and provide necessary comments and details.Search Keywords: notebook, laptop, computer, earphone, headphone, lesson, web, internet, education, typing, learning, reading, browsing, owl, wild animal, animal, bird, mascot, clip art, cutout, cartoon, wildlife, hobby, illustration, leisure, mascot, PPT, PowerPoint, Google Slides, Template.

I have already recommend Nordic Visitor to several friends and family members. We had an absolutely amazing trip and I can't wait to come back.

Everyone was helpful and patiently answered all of my questions. I'm very happy we chose Nordic Visitor for our trip and I would choose them again.

Excellent company to work with.

The materials provided to us were well chosen and very helpful. We asked for additional copies of the road map and bound guide and these were waiting for us on our return to Reykjavik. A pleasure doing business with Nordic Visitor. We usually book all our own arrangements, Italy, France, Germany, England, Ireland, Scotland etc but it was very nice to leave it to you folks to handle it in such detail but leave it to us to execute.

We could not have asked for a better travel agent. When my wife developed an emergency medical problem and we had to delay our trip by 3 days, Petra made all the adjustments without skipping a beat. She secured refunds on everything that she could.

The service provided by Nordic Visitor was excellent and we had one of the best and most enjoyable holidays we have ever had. It was a pity that the offices have moved out of the centre of Reykjavik as we would have liked to have visited to thank Klara in person. The self-drive tour was wonderful for us. It meant that we did not have to plan ourselves, and were advised of the best things to see along the way. However we still had the freedom to chose other things. All the accommodation was fantastic.
